Pad Thai- This is a delicious dish and backpackers seem to love it. Found on nearly every street corner, and in almost every restaurant. It literally translates to fried noodles. And is a sweet and sour tasting dish. It can be made with shrimp, chicken or vegetables. It's really cheap and is usually made right there in front of you.
Thai Green Curry- Another really popular dish among backpackers and well known among foreigners. Made mainly with green peppers, coconut milk and egg plant. This is a really spicy dish, you can ask them for it not spicy, but whether they listen or not is your guess. Definitely worth a try and if you like spicy food, this is your dish.
Massaman Curry- This is a really popular curry in Thailand, particularly among tourists. This is a thick orange looking curry usually containing some sort of meat, coconut milk, potatoes, roasted peanuts and then spices and herbs. It's really tasty and has a nice spice to it.
Kao Pad- This is basically fried rice and is really popular with tourists. It is usually served in the same street stalls that sell Pad Thai, so you can pick which one you want. It can be made with chicken, shrimp, pork or just vegetables usually. Again this is really cheap and easy to grab when you're on the go.
Pad See Ew- Another really flavoursome dish. a little bit different to the others mentioned. This is made with fat rice noodles that are usually soaked in soy sauce for flavour. It made with eggs and bok choy and then you can usually decide if you want the chicken, pork or beef version. This is a really sticky and really tasty dish. It's not spicy either.
Chicken Noodle Soup- There are loads of varieties of noodle soup and you would probably want more than just this for a meal, but it's very flavoursome and nice if you're not too hungry.
Sticky Rice and Mango- This is basically a really sticky rice, usually eaten with your hands as you can clump it up and put it into your mouth, it sounds plain, but it's actually really tasty. This is usually served as a dessert. The rice is often made with coconut milk to give it some added flavour and then mango is served on the side. Will definitely help to cool your mouth after a spicy curry.
Tom Yum- This is a really spicy soup, that spicy in fact that i found it hard to eat all of it, it made my eyes water in fact. It's made with fish sauce, lime juice, lemongrass and crushed chilis, hence why it's so hot. But it is tasty and if you like spicy food, you should definitely try it. If spicy food is not your thing, i would probably give this a miss.
Tom Yum Goong- This is basically a spicy shrimp soup, and it's delicious. Made primarily with lemongrass, mushrooms, tomatoes and of course shrimp. This is often served with rice and is really popular with the Thai's.
Malang Tod (Fried Insects)- This is a strange one. I mean you probably won't want to try this when you see them. But it's interesting to see and possibly try. They are found in bangkok from street vendors or in some restaurants. There are a massive range of insects such as worms, grasshoppers, scorpions, spiders, crickets. Usually eaten as a snack. But if you're feeling adventurous. Give it a try. They usually grilled and served with soy sauce.
